In this historical period, home deliveries have literally exploded. This made us reflect and compare with people, the riders, whom we are getting to know more and more given the great changes taking place not only in Italy but all over the world.
We want, in our small way, to highlight the fact that very often the rider’s work is not adequately protected from a legal and economic point of view.
Tommaso Falchi introduced us to Riders Union Bologna, a group of riders who work in food delivery and activists who work to protect the rights of precarious workers.
“We started by meeting to share our impressions about the working conditions that take us many or a few hours of the day. In the first moments of meeting we realized that our working conditions, although differentiated, are united by a strong precariousness and by ‘absence of protections. Many of us have accepted to take the risk for too long, probably also because the job of delivery boys, now called a rider, is not recognized as such, but is combined with a “job” or a pastime for sportsmen. (…)
We then asked ourselves if uniting could be the means to practice mutual aid and claim rights and protections, inspiring ourselves and looking at the experiences of other Italian and European cities. So we printed a flyer, met and talked. We have begun to network places in solidarity with our desire for redemption and to produce materials to better understand our condition from a working and legal point of view. From here on, we want to multiply the moments of meeting and mutual aid services to gain strength and claim our rights, for a safer job and city. Stop taking risks, let’s unite! ” Riders Union Bologna
Make it (riders) righters is an invitation to reflect on the current working conditions of people who in this historical period allow us to receive products from the comfort of home, getting closer and giving us the opportunity to support the catering activities of our country, giving us all the possibility of living a little more normal. Sometimes we live like a pleasant game to order and receive what we want at home, but behind this service there are sometimes difficult working conditions.
